An Audit Evidence Pack for Usage Revenue

By the Orvlin team · · 2 min read

Usage revenue audit evidence: what to decide

An auditor selects one invoice line and asks how it was calculated. A graph of monthly revenue cannot answer that question. The team needs records that identify the service and the rules used to rate it.

Agree the evidence requirements with finance and auditors. Include policy versions, approvals and reconciliations as appropriate, with controlled access to sensitive information. This is educational guidance, not a guarantee of audit sufficiency.

An illustrative case

For a sampled API charge, provide the agreement, applicable meter definition, account-period aggregate, rate version and any adjustment record. Each item explains one link in the calculation rather than repeating the final amount.

The important caveat

Raw event payloads can include customer data that is not needed for the review. Use minimized extracts and approved access channels. Evidence completeness should not override privacy and security obligations.

Review these decisions

  • Map invoice lines to contract and usage records.
  • Preserve rule versions and approvals.
  • Document reconciliations and exceptions.
  • Confirm the evidence pack with reviewers before close.

Frequently asked questions

Does a billing export satisfy an audit by itself?
Not necessarily. Auditors determine the required evidence, which may include controls, contracts and source records beyond an exported total.
