Turning Plan Limits Into Runtime Access Rules

By the Orvlin team · · 2 min read

Runtime plan limits: what to decide

Ten seats sounds simple until you ask whether pending invitations count. A million requests sounds simple until you ask what happens during simultaneous requests at the boundary. The runtime definition should resolve these questions before the offer launches.

Distinguish boolean access, capacity limits and consumable quotas. Boolean access controls a feature. Capacity limits constrain current resources. Consumable quotas measure activity over a period. Each needs a different update and reset strategy.

How this works in practice

A ten-seat plan might count active members but not pending invitations. If two administrators accept invitations simultaneously at nine active members, a shared capacity check prevents both from creating an unintended eleventh seat.

What can go wrong

Do not equate the quota reset with the local calendar month unless the contract says so. Subscription anniversaries, trial periods and annual buckets can have different boundaries.

Questions for your team

  • Define exactly what consumes each limit.
  • Choose the scope and reset boundary.
  • Specify over-limit messages and recovery actions.
  • Test simultaneous changes and delayed updates.

Frequently asked questions

Should every limit block activity?
No. Some limits trigger overages or warnings instead. The plan should distinguish a commercial threshold from a hard technical ceiling.
