Rounding Usage Charges: Small Decisions, Big Reconciliation Gaps

Rounding usage charges: what to decide
A request costs a fraction of a cent. If each event is rounded to the nearest cent before aggregation, a thousand requests may produce a very different bill from the advertised rate. Precision is a pricing rule, not cosmetic formatting.
Keep unit conversion, rating precision and final currency rounding separate. The customer-facing display can show fewer decimals than the internal calculation, but it must not imply a different contractual rate. Document how minimum charges or block units interact with rounding.
How this works in practice
At an illustrative $0.0004 per event, 1,000 events cost $0.40 before other items. Rounding each event to cents produces zero, while rounding the aggregate preserves the intended charge. Always state where rounding occurs.
What can go wrong
A spreadsheet and an application may use different rounding modes. Agreement on the formula matters more than agreement on how many digits appear on screen. Test boundary cases and negative adjustments explicitly.
Questions for your team
- Preserve sufficient precision during rating.
- Set a documented final rounding mode.
- Test fractional rates and credit adjustments.
- Compare exported calculations with finance’s reference model.
Frequently asked questions
- Can we just display two decimal places everywhere?
- Display formatting is not a calculation policy. Rates may need more precision even when invoice totals use the currency’s normal minor units.
