How to A/B Test Pricing Safely

By the Orvlin team · · 7 min read

Who to include

Start with new sign-ups. Existing customers should stay on the price they agreed to unless you plan a clear migration.

Assign customers consistently

Each account should always see the same variant. Fixed (deterministic) assignment prevents customers from seeing different prices on different visits.

Measure what matters

Conversion is only the first signal. Compare revenue per account, expansion and churn over at least one billing cycle.

Run tests where prices live

Running experiments in the billing system avoids mismatches between the price shown and the price invoiced. Orvlin includes pricing experiments for this reason.

Frequently asked questions

Is price testing legal?
Generally yes, but local consumer laws vary. Check with counsel, especially for consumer products.
How long should a pricing test run?
Long enough to cover at least one full billing cycle, and longer for annual plans.
