Platform Fees and Usage Charges: Avoiding the Double-Charge Feeling

Platform fee and usage charges: what to decide

A buyer hears that usage is pay-as-you-go, then sees a mandatory platform charge. The objection is often about clarity rather than price. What does the fixed payment provide even in a quiet month?

A platform fee might fund account access, baseline capacity or a recurring service bundle. Usage can price the variable work. Keep the explanation specific and avoid treating every standard feature as a separate add-on.

A concrete scenario

An illustrative offer has a $200 monthly fee including administration and 5,000 requests, then $0.02 per additional request. At 8,000 requests the total is $260. Charging all 8,000 requests again would contradict the included allowance.

A detail teams often miss

A base fee that includes no meaningful service can look like a disguised minimum. If it is a minimum spend, say so and explain whether usage charges count toward it. Different labels should not conceal different calculations.

Before you put this into production

  • Write the fixed-fee promise in one sentence.
  • State whether usage is included or additional.
  • Test a zero-usage and a high-usage invoice.
  • Show minimum-spend rules separately from platform access.

Frequently asked questions

Is a platform fee the same as a minimum commitment?
Not necessarily. A platform fee may be additional to usage, while a spend minimum can be satisfied by usage charges. The contract must distinguish them.
