Quarantining Invalid Usage Events Instead of Silently Discarding Them

Invalid usage event quarantine: what to decide

A schema change renames customer_id to account_id. Events keep arriving, but mapping fails. If the pipeline drops them without an exception record, the issue may first appear as lower revenue weeks later.

Define required fields, units and timestamp constraints. Record invalid event identity and a safe diagnostic reason, while minimizing sensitive payload retention. Fix the source and replay only after validation and deduplication controls are in place.

Follow one account through the calculation

A negative quantity is invalid for a consumption event but might be meaningful in a dedicated correction workflow. Routing both through the same unchecked schema hides the difference between bad data and an authorized adjustment.

Check this before launch

Automatically guessing missing values can be worse than rejecting the event. Mapping unknown accounts to a default payer or assuming units can create confident, incorrect bills.

Steps to take next

  • Validate required fields and units.
  • Record actionable rejection reasons.
  • Assign exception owners.
  • Replay repaired records with stable identities.

Frequently asked questions

Should invalid events be billed using default values?
Not without an explicit, justified policy. Unknown identity or unit information should trigger review rather than a guessed charge.
