Keeping Customer Billing Links Working After a Migration

Billing portal migration links: what to decide

A customer clicks a saved invoice link after launch and sees a dead end. The migration may have moved future billing correctly, but it broke the evidence needed for their own close and reimbursement workflows.

Inventory links in emails, app navigation and support documentation. Decide where historic documents remain accessible and how account permissions carry over. A redirect must not reveal another account’s invoice or bypass authorization.

Follow one account through the calculation

The new portal handles future invoices, while an archive provides previous documents through an authorized account view. A clear date boundary helps customers understand which location contains each period.

Check this before launch

Do not assume document numbers can be reused freely. Identity collisions between old and new invoice systems can confuse search, reconciliation and customer communications. Preserve original references.

Steps to take next

  • Inventory customer-facing billing entry points.
  • Keep historic invoice references accessible.
  • Test account permissions on old and new documents.
  • Update support and email links at cutover.

Frequently asked questions

Must all old invoices move into the new portal?
Not necessarily. An accessible, authorized archive can work, provided customers can reliably find the documents they need.
